Durango, CO & the Summit Tav

I cut out on you last time without finishing up on Flagstaff. What a great place! The owner of the Hotel Monte Vista (Sean) takes great care of us. We get the royal treatment every visit and he provides us with a guarantee and rooms. This time he even gave us an upgrade and hooked us up with two of his best rooms. Ben and I took the Alan Ladd suite and the other guys got the Presidential Suite. Hell yeah!

And there was another surprise. Our good friend Joe Howe (part owner of the Sunset Tavern in Seattle) came out to Flagstaff just to party with us and see the show. He got a room and closed out the night! Man, I love this guy and it was great to get to hang out with him outside of Seattle. Good times to be sure.

The crowd was rowdy and the Monte V and there were a good number of returning fans. Here’s a clip of me entering the room at the beginning of our set.

We had a nice talk with Sean the next morning, and there is talk of having us back for a big music festival in August. I’ll pretty much take any offer to play in Flagstaff and hang out at the Monte V. We still gotta work out the dates, but I’d say there is a good chance we’ll be back this summer.

Durango:

I have been looking forward to the Summit Tav show since I booked it. We have a good deal of support in this town and the local press gives us love. Story from the Durango Herald here: http://www.durangoherald.com/sections/A&E/2010/03/12/The_Rodeo_rides_rhythms_of_real_country_music/)

The local radio station KDUR (www.kdur.org) aired a 30-minute interview previewing our new album and our appearance at the Summit Tav. All indication was that this would be a perfect night.

And it was a perfect night for us as far as the show was concerned. A ton of people came out and we played our Asses off. We had a bottle of Jack on stage for the baptism and people went nuts. For the first time I saw baptism veterans adding stylish moves to their baptismal. Men were dipping their gals in front of me and the girls were opening their mouths like little birds. Kudos goes to the folks of Durango for taking things up a notch. But things got weird after that.

There is a point in every tour when cowboys get tense. We have been doing this long enough that we expect a full melt down to happen somewhere along the road. Any one-band member can be the instigator and when it happens everyone gets sucked in to the drama. We have become such a family at this point, that it’s understood that everyone is entitled to lose their shit at some point. This time around the melt down happened in Durango, and I was the instigator.

I’m not proud of what went down after the show. I have a habit of not speaking my mind until it is too late. There had been a number of things building up that were bugging me. None of them were band deal breakers, but the stress of booking a tour, traveling in tight quarters, and trying to keep it all together financially wears on a guy. It makes it so the small things seem intolerable. I’m sure you might want more details, but there is no need to flesh this internal stuff out in public. Let’s just say I had to say some things and they got said late at night in the middle of the street while were loading the van.

It was loud, it was obnoxious, and anyone who witnessed it would have thought our band was finished. Not so. Like I said, we’ve been through this before. I feel worse for Bryan Crawford because this was his first time to experience the Rodeo melt down. I think he lost some sleep over the whole thing. But you know what, sometimes things need to be said. We all went our separate ways and met back at the room after a little cool down. In the end there was a less emotional (and more productive) talk. We put it behind us. Even Bryan survived this unpleasant Rodeo tradition in tact. Let’s just say this may have been the last missing piece needed for the new guy to earn his stripes. Welcome to the Rodeo Bryan!

This morning we got up, got some breakfast and hit the road. We are driving through snow now, and just coming in to Albuquerque for an early show at the Atomic Cantina.

Tomorrow night we will be in Tulsa. It’s a big drive (10 hours or so??). Better play some music and get back on the road. That’s what we do.
