The Rodeo wakes up SLO after a day off.
On our off day, we decided to take it easy and drive part way to L.A. Since we got a late start we only made it as far as San Luis Obispo.
Waking up with this band is pretty much the same every day. Sugar gets up before everyone else and scouts out the neighborhood. By the time the rest of us get up, he has discovered the neighborhood coffee shop. This gives the rest of us a reason to rise from our coffins. Today Tiny Dancer had a gift for Sugar when he returned from his scouting routine.
Today, like most days, we push it to the limit on our check out. We ask for a late check out, but they can only give us an extra 30 minutes which means we have to get out at 11:30 AM. Way too early for a bunch of worn out cowboys. No worries, Sugar knows where the coffee shop is and it's time to get a move on anyway. The two of us get fueled up while the others finish packing. Sugar explains some crap to me about SLO. Seems appropriate given our slow start today.
And I get my coffee and blueberry muffin.
When we get back the others are ready for coffee and food as well. We return to the same coffee shop because Ben wants a breakfast burrito, and they've got em there. At this point the van is loaded and we are checked out, so we just hit it on the way out of town.
Ben get's his burrito and another coffee for Sugar while the rest wait in the van. Bryan is jacked in on his personal world wide web device catching up on some secret spy shit he does on the side. When Ben get's back, we drive two blocks and Bryan asks "Are we gonna stop for some food?". Are you fucking kidding me? We just stopped for food!
God damn it, if I didn't personally know that Bryan was working on some sort of crazy "save the world" top secret stuff, I would have flown through the roof. But because I know his work is important and he really needs some food and coffee, I agree to order the van around the block a third time and we go back to the exact same coffee shop. Tiny Dancer is not happy at this point, but it's important for Bryan to have his food.
Bryan seems happy with his burrito.
After what seems like an hour of driving in circles around San Luis Obispo, we finally get on the road. Time to get out to Anaheim for a show at the legendary Doll Hut!
But hold up. We can't just blow through California wine country without a traditional cowboy wine tasting.
Wine can creep up on you. As we approach L.A. Sugar let's the driver know he's gotta pee. Only problem is that L.A. traffic has already started at 3:30PM. When you're traveling it's important to always schedule your pee's so that they happen in outlying areas. Major metropolitan traffic jams are not a good place for this sort of thing. Sugar knows this. Sugar should have known better. Sugar is forced to wait until we get to the Doll Hut. Here's what happens when we get there.
After Sugar takes care of some business, we find a cheap hotel near the club (Disneyland Holiday Inn) and get some dinner. Sugar expresses his affection for the band here.
The folks at the Doll Hut are awesome. This is a Tuesday show, and frankly it's great to even have a show on Tuesday. Early days in the week are always tough to fill when booking a tour, and nobody wants to have another day off. Tim the booker was so cool about it, he had his own band opened the show for us. They were some bad ass hardcore crazies called DMF (Dirty Mother Fuckers). We watched their set, and then they gave us some love. It may have not been the biggest night ever in the history of the Doll Hut, but we killed it and this sets the stage for some bigger stuff around the corner. Tim is already talking to us about a nice weekend bill with some bad ass local bands in June.
This is honestly the best part of touring. You meet some great people and build connections at every stop. It's not always number of people at the show, but the type of people who come out. We met some good folks on this stop. Here is a little taste of what can happen at the end of the night when on tour with the Rodeo.
Time for me to get up and hit the hot tub at the Disneyland Holiday Inn. We play in downtown L.A. at the Redwood tonight. Looking forward to some more fun.
Later,
Brent
